Two Days of Scientific Discussions!

SMBE Regional Meeting in Brazil is an event that brings together professionals and researchers in the field of conservation genomics to exchange knowledge and insights on long term resilience of species using genomic data. The meeting will provide a platform for scientific discussions, presentations, and networking opportunities. Additionally, it will offer travel grants for post-docs and graduate students from Brazilian institutions to encourage participation of early career scientists. The Regional Meeting is funded by the Society for Molecular Biology and Evoluton SMBE, and will have a strong focus on conservation genomics in Brazil. We aim to bring researchers to the Amazon region.

Cristiano Vernesi

Dr. Vernesi is a Senior Researcher at Fondazione Edmund Mach (Italy) where he studies the genetic dimension of biodiversity in mountain areas. He is also involved in European and international projects addressing the science-policy interface of biodiversity. He is the chair of the European network Genomic Biodiversity Knowledge for Resilient Ecosystems (G-BIKE).

Juliana Vianna

Dr. Vianna is a professor at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (Chile). Her research on evolutionary biology focuses on vertebrate species to study animal diversity, delineate biological diversity, phylogeography, and adaptation using genomic approaches. She is currently the chair of the Chilean 1000 Genomes project.

Mariana Telles

Dr. Telles is a professor at Federal University of Goiás (Brazil). She works in the interface of Genetics and Genomics focusing on population genetics, molecular ecology and conservation of plants of the Cerrado savanna. She is also the president of the Brazilian Society of Genetic Resources.

Sandro Bonatto

Dr. Bonatto is a professor at Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil). His research focuses on Biological Evolution, Conservation Genomics and Systematics.

Harris Lewin

Dr. Lewin is a Research Professor, Arizona State University; and a distinguished professor emeritus at University of California Davis (USA). His research interest is in mammalian genome evolution as it relates to adaptation, speciation, and the origins of cancer. He is also the chair of the Earth BioGenome Project.

Abstract and travel grants submission deadline: August 23th, 2024 CLOSED
Accepted contributions and travel grants decision: Early September, 2024
Registration deadline: September 25th, 2024

Registration is free. While registration will be on a first-come,first-serve basis, however, we are limited to 100 attendees. We request that only those with the intent to attend the event onsite register.

We encourage participants to submit abstracts for talks or posters. Please submit your abstract HERE

Graduate students and post-doctoral researchers affiliated with Brazilian institutions that need a travel grant to attend the meeting are encouraged to submit a request here. While presenting a poster or talk is not required, it is highly encouraged. We want to hear about your interesting research!

Travel grants

We will offer 15 travel grants for early career scientists (graduate students and postdoctoral researchers) affiliated with Brazilian institutions to attend. The grant will include a flat rate for the plane ticket and 3 nights in a hotel
